Heidi is known for her commitment and dedication to clients, and her valuable combination of insight to estate planning, trust administration, and tax law.

A certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law by the California State Bar, Heidi has nearly a decade of professional experience and a deep understanding of trusts, estates, and their tax implications (candidate, LLM in Taxation, expected summer 2022).

Clients seek her guidance in drafting and designing estate plans, including high-net worth individuals, clients with business succession issues, and clients with unique family situations. She has deep experience in trust administration, including crafting asset allocations, ensuring tax and probate law compliance, and managing the often complex relationships between trustees and beneficiaries.

Heidi applies the same diligence to client matters that has distinguished her throughout her career: earning the Thomas Jefferson Award (as top student in the political science department) and graduating magna cum laude from Saint Mary’s College of California; being named a Thurston Society member, earning membership in the Order of the Coif, and graduating magna cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law; and earning the top student award in Federal Tax Accounting and Tax Timing at the University of San Francisco.


Francesca K. Boyd

Francesca advises clients in all areas of estate planning, estate administrative law, wealth management, and wealth transfer planning. She has experience in drafting complex wills and trust agreements, preparing pre- and post- marital agreements, probating estates, administering trusts, analyzing estate and gift taxation matters, and advising fiduciaries. Representing corporate clients, Francesca has provided legal services on business succession, charitable transfers and tax compliance.

Additionally, she served as Senior Project Manager of a real estate development company, overseeing design, entitlement, construction, and marketing, as well as managing outside legal counsel, financial advisors and lending institutions. In this role, she managed relationships with investors, partners, city officials and the community.

Francesca is also experienced in navigating California’s complex property tax rules governing change of ownership and reassessment of real estate.


Robin L. Thornton

Robin, who chairs the Eminent Domain Practice Group, has nearly 20 years’ law firm experience, including thirteen years practicing in eminent domain and public agency law.  She has represented public and private entities and individuals in a variety of contexts, including appellate matters, trials, administrative hearings, alternative dispute resolution proceedings, private negotiations, and in advisory capacities. In addition to condemnation law, Robin also practices general civil litigation, property tax, real property, insurance coverage, and employment law.

She is best known for her representation in the Richmond Refinery case, which was among the most complex assessment appeals matters in California’s history. Additionally, she has worked on mediations, arbitrations, court and jury trials in Alameda, Solano, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, and Orange Counties.

Notable public projects include the Interstate 80 / Interstate 680 / State Route 12 Interchange and the North Connector in Solano County, Caltrans Truck Scale project in Cordelia, and the State Route 4 Bypass in Brentwood and Oakley.


Walter R. Turner

Walt is a partner in the firm’s taxation and business groups. His practice focuses on corporate and business transactions, with an emphasis on associated federal income tax matters. Highly experienced, Walt is esteemed by clients and colleagues for his deep insight, trusted counsel, and enduring relationships.

Business and Tax Counsel

Walt guides clients in a broad range of transactional matters. His practice emphasizes sales and acquisitions, including mergers and other tax free reorganization transactions involving closely-held companies doing business in California and throughout the United States. The mergers and acquisitions Walt handles are often the result of succession planning for family-owned businesses, another focus of his practice.

Expert Consultant and Witness

In recent years, Walt has devoted significant time to expert consultant and witness work in complex income tax and federal estate and gift tax cases. A member of the firm since 1978, he is a former member of the Tax Law Advisory Commission of the California Board of Legal Specialization. Walt has authored or co-authored numerous publications dealing with income tax matters, and he lectures frequently before trade and professional organizations.
