Donald Simon Honored With USGBC's President's Award

OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 25, 2012Donald Simon, a partner at Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean LLP, has been named a recipient of the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) 2012 Leadership Awards. The USGBC awards “seek to recognize outstanding individuals who embody the vision, leadership and commitment to the evolution of green building and communities as a vehicle to enhance our quality of life.” Simon will be honored with this year’s President’s Award, which will be presented at the Leadership Luncheon on Nov. 15 during USGBC’s Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in San Francisco.

“I’m humbled by this honor and eternally grateful for the opportunity USGBC has provided me to blend my passion with my profession,” said Simon. “The green building movement’s overwhelming and growing success is proof that a small group of passionate people can start a contagion that changes the world. My firm, Wendel Rosen, has embodied this same vision by pioneering legal services to serve and expand the green building industry, as well as the broader green business movement.”

Simon is a recognized leader in empowering businesses to become agents of positive environmental and social change. He co-founded USGBC’s Northern California Chapter and the residential green building organization, Build It Green. Simon serves as general counsel to both organizations and several others, and represents numerous green business companies. He also co-chaired the effort to author and pass California legislation last year that established a new corporate form for socially responsible businesses called Benefit Corporations, an effort for which he received California Lawyer magazine’s “Attorney of the Year” award. A frequent speaker and moderator on green business topics, Simon will be presenting on green building legal considerations at this year’s Greenbuild Expo.

Simon’s legal practice focuses on advising companies and public agencies on matters related to construction, green building, renewable energy and green business. He co-founded Wendel Rosen’s Green Business Practice Group and led the firm's internal sustainability efforts, helping it to become the first law firm in the nation certified as a green business. Simon received both his J.D. (1995) and his B.A. (1992) from Ohio State University.
